Roeland Duijne
PSO Soloists archive

Roeland Duijne began to play the cello at the age of nine. He studied with Tibor de Machula, Anner Bijlsma (Royal Conser-vatory of The Hague), Maurice Gendron (Paris Conservatory) and Janos Starker (Indiana University, Bloomington).

He made his official début in 1984 as soloist in Elgar's Cello Concerto on a nationwide tour of Holland with the National University Orchestra. This was followed by numerous performen-ces, including an appearance on the popular television series Young People on the Concert Platform.

Roeland Duijne performed with the Ensemble Intercontemporain conducted by Pierre Boulez. He is a member of the Quintette de Paris, with which he has played throughout France. Last year he was appointed Principal Cello with the Irish Chamber Orchestra.

Several tours have brought him to the Far East; he appeared as soloist with the Symphony Orchestras of Shanghai, Beijing and Kanton. With the pianist Rié Tanaka he performed in Sapporo and Tokyo.

He also has great interest in jazz/pop music. He recorded Friedrich Gulda's Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra with the German Jugendblasorchester Nordrhein-Westfalen after joining them on their recent America tour. His own band Mellow Cello celebrates the wealth of popmusic especial-ly written for this formation.

Roeland Duijne plays a Giuseppe Sgarbi cello made in 1853.
